IraqDr. Salahaddin Yasin Baper is a Professor in the Department of Architecture at Salahaddin University Erbil, with extensive experience in architectural education, research, and professional practice. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture with Honors from the University of Technology, Baghdad, in 1993, graduating first in his class out of 65 students during the 1992 “1993 academic year. His early academic distinction reflects a sustained commitment to excellence in architectural design and theoretical inquiry. He pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Technology, Baghdad, where he obtained a Master of Science in Architectural Technology, ranking first in the masters program. His masters research focused on communicative action in architecture, examining how architectural form, space, and symbolism function as mediums of communication between the built environment and its users. Drawing on theoretical frameworks related to meaning, interaction, and social discourse, this research highlighted architectures role in shaping human understanding, behavior, and collective experience. Dr. Baper later completed his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the Theory of Architecture at the School of Housing, Building and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). His doctoral research addressed critical issues of architectural theory, with particular emphasis on architectural identity, meaning-making processes, and the conceptual foundations of design within rapidly transforming urban and cultural contexts. Dr. Bapers academic interests encompass architectural identity, architectural theory, design strategies and methodologies, phenomenology in architecture, and the integration of emerging technologies into contemporary architectural practice. His research explores the complex relationship between spatial configuration, cultural context, collective memory, and user perception, particularly in cities undergoing processes of modernization and globalization. He has contributed to academic discourse through research publications, conference participation, and the supervision of graduate and postgraduate theses. In parallel with his academic career, Dr. Baper is an experienced Consultant Architect who has played a leading role in the design and realization of several significant projects in Erbil. His professional portfolio includes key support and service facilities at Erbil International Airport, as well as major architectural and landscape developments within Sami Abdurrahman Park. His practice demonstrates a careful balance between conceptual rigor, functional performance, and contextual sensitivity. At Salahaddin University Erbil, Dr. Baper teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in architectural design, design theory, architectural technology, and advanced design studios. He is actively involved in curriculum development, academic mentoring, and the supervision of masters and doctoral research. His teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking, theoretical grounding, and the integration of design thinking with technological and cultural awareness. Through his combined roles as educator, researcher, and practicing architect, Dr. Baper continues to contribute to the advancement of architectural knowledge and practice. His work fosters innovation, critical inquiry, and a deeper understanding of architecture as a communicative, cultural, and technological discipline within the regional context and beyond.
